2048: The Grid of Sliding Powers and Spatial Control
Sixteen squares. Two numbers to start. Every swipe shifts every free tile across the board. You slide, they collide, and identical values merge into their doubled sum. Two becomes four. Four becomes eight. Eight climbs toward two thousand forty-eight. The board fills fast. A single thoughtless swipe clogs open space and traps small values behind large ones. Space shrinks with every turn. You either control the board with strict geometric discipline, or the board locks up and kills your run.

The Weekend Project That Captivated Millions
In March 2014, Italian web developer Gabriele Cirulli sat down in Gorizia, Italy. He was nineteen years old. Working over a single weekend, he built 2048 as an open-source exercise in JavaScript. He wanted to see if he could program a sliding tile engine from scratch. Cirulli drew direct mechanics from two earlier titles: 1024 by Veewo Studios and Threes by Asher Vollmer.
Cirulli posted his project to GitHub. Within days, the game exploded across social media and developer forums. Over four million people played within the first week alone. Clones and mobile ports flooded every digital storefront. Yet the original open-source version remained the purest incarnation: clean, unforgiving, and completely devoid of paywalls or artificial timers.
Grid Mechanics and Tile Physics
The entire game runs on a four-by-four grid containing sixteen individual slots. You control the board using four directional commands: Up, Down, Left, and Right.
Movement rules and collision physics follow strict parameters:
The Core Rules and Point Scoring
Points accumulate directly from merges. When two 4s merge into an 8, your score increases by 8 points. When two 1024s merge into 2048, your score jumps by 2048 points. Initial 2 and 4 tiles that spawn on the board award zero points on their own.
Victory triggers the moment a 2048 tile appears anywhere on the grid. Reaching 2048 does not end the run. The game lets you keep sliding to build 4096, 8192, 16384, and beyond.
Loss occurs under one condition: gridlock. If all sixteen squares contain tiles and no adjacent horizontal or vertical neighbors share matching values, no legal moves remain. The board freezes and the run ends.

The most reliable strategy is the corner anchoring method: keep your highest-value tile positioned in one fixed corner (e.g. bottom-right) and build descending monotonic chains along the edges. Never swipe in the opposite direction to avoid displacing your high tile.
